I think the mad hair has a lot to do with it. I first saw this picture some time before Sherlock came out, so my first impression of pictures of Cumberbatch in that role was ‘Would he make a good Chrestomanci?’ I concluded naaaah, because Chrestomanci needs to appear more blandly handsome as part of that special mask of vagueness that he uses to keep people at a distance when he doesn’t want to be bothered with them.
